Impact on your website traffic from blogging vs a link from a high profile website

17 April 2010

I started my blog on the 11th March 2010 (point 1 in graph below). My traffic didn't increase right away, but over time, I started getting more traffic from search engines. The real breakthrough was being Startup of the Day on the Microsoft BizSpark program (point 2 in graph below).

Impact on traffic from blogging vs a link from a high profile website

Writing a blog is essential to the long terms search engine optimization of a website. However, it doesn't have an immediate effect in traffic. When I write a new blog article, it takes at least 4 weeks before it starts being found by people using search engines.

A link from a high profile website like the BizSpark Startup of the Day, on the other hand, has an immediate impact on traffic. That effect eventually tails off when the link is moved from its prominent location on the main page to an archived one; however I'm still getting some traffic from that one high profile link.

Conclusion on traffic impact of link vs blog

Start by writing a blog with good quality article that give relevant content to search engines. At the same time, try to get high profile websites to link to yours. Note here that getting poor links from just any website is not what you should be aiming for. Try to get a link from the most popular and relevant websites.
